Debunking Myths Surrounding Industrial LED lighting

RSS

Despite the widespread popularity of LEDs for industrial applications, many businesses are still not convinced about its efficiency. As compared to conventional lights, LED lighting is a more reliable solution for industrial units. Yet, there are many myths associated with its use.

In order to clear some prevailing misconceptions, here are the five most common myths surrounding industrial LED lighting:

LEDs are pricey

Although LEDs cost more upfront than fluorescents, HIDs and other industrial lighting alternatives, they last for years. From the long-term perspective, industrial LED lighting systems are a cost-effective option because of their high efficiency. Therefore, they are an affordable replacement for conventional industrial lighting, especially when one thinks in terms of energy conserved and lower energy bills.

LEDs require a lot of maintenance

Unlike traditional lighting sources, LED lights don’t require extensive maintenance. Most people believe that LEDs’ magnetic ballasts need frequent servicing. The reality is that industrial LED lighting systems contain electronic drivers that can survive in harsh environments. These electronic drivers don’t require replacement.

On the other hand, conventional industrial lighting systems contain magnetic ballasts that are susceptible to wear and tear. Therefore, they need regular maintenance and replacement. As large industrial facilities have innumerable lights, the maintenance cost of lights skyrockets.

LEDs don’t save power

LED lighting systems consume 15 % of the energy of a standard halogen bulb. However at the same time, LEDs emit 100% of the light.

As compared to standard bulbs, LEDs save power in industrial applications.  Standard bulbs are vacuum tubes, whereas LED is a chip that has better performance.

LEDs contain mercury

Unlike fluorescents, LEDs don’t have mercury. Therefore, LED is not as harmful as fluorescents. In fact, industrial LED systems can work efficiently in all types of environment, hot, cold, rugged, etc.

Most importantly, LED has a longer lifespan than its counterparts. Typically, its down light service has exceeded 50,000 hours. Besides, it is practically maintenance-free.

LEDs have poor light quality

Most people believe that LED systems generate dim light. LED has a soft, eye pleasing light. They are available in various diodes, which can be changed to suit varying color temperatures.

These color temperatures range from 2,500K to 6,500K. In addition, the color rendering indexes lie between 75 and 85.

With so many benefits, LED is the perfect lighting choice for commercial and industrial units.
