What is Galvanized Steel?

RSS

When choosing a light fixture, it is common to see a variety of materials and finishes being used, such as Natural Copper, Cold-Rolled Steel, and Aluminum. But what is galvanized steel?

With galvanization, one might think of a silver or chrome finish, when in reality, galvanization is the process of applying a zinc coating to steel or iron to create a durable and rust-resistant finish.

There are a variety of galvanizing techniques that can be used, but among the most common is hot-dip galvanizing, where the steel is immersed in molten zinc.

One of the distinct characteristics of hot-dipped galvanization are the crystalline spangles that form on the steel surface from alloys and minor impurities found in the zinc.

The zinc coating prevents corrosion such as rust from degrading the steel, leading to a longer-lasting and durable product.

Galvanized metal is used in a variety of applications, including residential, commercial, and automotive construction, and is considered more environmentally friendly due to its low maintenance and typically zero-emission manufacturing process.

With regard to lighting, there is a certain industrial look and modern feel of galvanized steel, with the added benefit of being long-lasting due to the rust-resistant zinc coating.

Our Galvanized Finish Fovero RLMs are a true Galvanized steel and are excellent for industrial and modern indoor and outdoor applications.

Due to their versatility, these galvanized steel lighting fixtures are able to be used in commercial sign lighting, storefronts, garages, and a variety of other applications.
